A Stark Warning About Artificial Sweeteners

Nearly half the world’s population consumes a beverage that increases the risk of depression by 30%.

That’s the headline from Jeff Haden (@jeff_haden) from Inc.com who writes about a study of 260,000 people which found artificial sweeteners in drinks may be the culprit.

  • 10-year study of over 260,000 people (link here) – published 2014
  • Those who drank over 4 cans of soda a day were 30% more likely to be depressed than those who didn’t drink any soda
  • Those who drank coffee (without adding artificial sweeteners) were 10% less likely to be depressed than those who drank no coffee
  • Aspartame and Saccharin are to be avoided
  • Aspartame may modulate brain neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin

Given Arbonne’s “Pure | Safe | Beneficial” ethos, it’s perhaps no surprise then, that artificial flavours and sweeteners are banned from going into their products. I guess they didn’t really need a study of 260,000 to know the dangers already! 🙂
